The Catholic Bible features a list of accepted books, referred to as a canon. The books in this part of the Catholic Bible are historical. The two most accepted Old Testament collections during the time of Jesus were the Septuagint (a Greek translation containing 46 books, including the first book of Genesis) and an Old Testament collection containing 39 books. The books that Jesus and his disciples often referenced were part of the Septuagint.

Information On Confession

Confessing to a Priest: Why It is Done

Christians who are Protestant sometimes do not understand why a Catholic Confession involves talking to a a priest. The answer to that quandary is supported in the book of James, specifically James 5:16, which states per the NIV (New International Version) translation, as follows:

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

As you can see from the directive, you are not told to confess your sins solely to God. Cleansing of sin takes place when you use the authority of Jesus, which is given to men.

Mathew 9:6-8 supports these two essential points in the following text:

6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . .” Then he said to the paralytic, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 And the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.

In Conclusion

Therefore, the Bible clarifies the reason why confession must be made through a priest. The power of God is exercised through the Christian ministry of the Catholic priest.
So, if you are Catholic and have not confessed for some time, or you are a Protestant and want to better understand Catholic traditions and rituals, knowing the reason for confession and why it is done is essential to your spiritual growth.

Becoming Closer To God

Time for a Reconciliation: Getting Closer to God

If you haven’t attended mass in awhile or you aren’t participating in confession, then making the move to do so can enhance your life spiritually and assist in deepening your faith. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, otherwise referred to as the Sacrament of Confession, is one unique aspect of Catholicism that Christians can embrace.

Jesus established this Sacrament so sinners can receive forgiveness as well as re-establish their relationship with God. Confession is indeed good for the soul as it allows Christians to become renewed in Christ.

Referring to John 20: 21-23 can help clarify the importance of confessing one’s sins. The New International Version (NIV) of this message is set forth as follows:
“21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

The verses emphasize the need for forgiveness and cleansing oneself of inequity. Saying the Lord’s Prayer on a routine basis too reminds us that forgiveness is essential if we want become close to God and continue to do his will.

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

So, if you haven’t confessed in some time, you can be assured that the Church will welcome you with open and loving arms. Confession allows Catholics to take a step forward in their faith, all which promotes such feelings as joy, love, and peace. If you want to know yourself better and strengthen your spiritual connection, then, again, make it a point to go to Confession. Confession reminds us that we truly need God’s assistance in order to experience grace and peace.
